Day 4 - Fougères

Today I’m riding out to Vitré, where there’s another castle. Unlike yesterday’s circular ride, which had no discernible landmarks, today I’m looking forward to arriving, pausing, and then heading back to Fougères. With wall-to-wall sunshine in the forecast, it’s on with the suncream and off on the bike. I should also mention that I’m still in Brittany, though tomorrow I’ll cross into Normandy.

There’s a flat, fairly direct greenway linking Fougères to Vitré — though I only get to use it for about a kilometre.

Stretching 279 kilometres from Mont Saint-Michel to Nantes, this greenway offers the makings of a wonderfully relaxed tour. To catch the spirit of the region, though, you’d need to wander off the path now and then — into a village square for a coffee, or down a side road where life moves at a gentle pace.

It was a steep climb to get this photo.
A third of the distance done and I take a coffee break at a bar tabac in Saint-M'Hervé.
Today's route is one I found on Komoot, my navigation tool. The route is well designed as you do more than half the distance getting out to Vitré, you get a fast road back and just when that gets boring you head off on a single track road.
Vitré - having trawled my memory bank on the way - is as I remembered it.
