France is a little too accessible from the UK and this has made me lazy. This tour sees me taking the night ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo, cycling into Normandy for a week in a Gîte then after cycling further inland heading back to the coast where I take the night ferry from Cherbourg to Poole. From a logistics point of view the short crossings from Dover work well if you are heading to Belgium or the far north of France but a four hour crossing into Dieppe ties up too much daylight in the spring and autumn months meaning an overnight in one of the ports. The night ferry deals with a bed for the night and gets you down to Brittany or Normandy.
My criteria for the Gîte was location for varied day rides, a nearby supermarket, a nearby restaurant and of course cost.
I try and find a theme for a tour such as advice on touring, the destination, a poet, cycling quotes but this time I am lacking inspiration. This is a good thing. The week before heading out I read a short cycling article where the author didn't wax lyrical about the joys, benefits, challenges, technology of cycling and his point was that sometimes a great bike ride is just that, a great bike ride. I am looking forward to a great bike ride
